Fire testing of bio-based and circular materials for buildings and construction

The construction sector is undergoing a fundamental transformation. Biogenic materials and circular design are essential to reducing climate impact—but they also introduce new fire risks. And the materials must still meet the same fire safety requirements as conventional construction products.

DBI supports manufacturers and developers with fire testing and consultancy services based on years of research and solid data on bio-based and circular materials for construction. We help enable more buildings to be constructed using biogenic, recyclable materials without compromising fire safety.

Examples of bio-based and circular products, we work with:

  • Building facades
  • Timber constructions for buildings
  • Insulation materials
  • Reused doors and fire doors
  • Reused building materials like hemp and bricks

Our experienced fire safety and innovation experts work closely with DBI’s fire testing engineers to find the best solutions for each individual client.

This enables us to provide 360° advice and support throughout your construction project.

Fire performance of bio-based and circular materials

Bio-based and circular construction materials are tested according to the same fire safety requirements and test standards as other construction products.

From a fire testing perspective, the focus remains documentation of the product’s fire performance during fire exposure under standardised test conditions.

Depending on the product type, this may include both reaction-to-fire testing at material level and fire resistance testing of complete building components.

Supporting documentation of new material types

Bio-based and circular construction products are often based on new material combinations, recycled content or alternative raw materials. This can create new documentation needs during product development and market introduction.

DBI performs fire testing and documentation of bio-based and circular materials for construction applications.

The testing activities are supported by broader research and innovation activities in our research unit with focus on fire-safe use of bio-based and circular construction products.

Our 3,000 square meter headquarters near Copenhagen houses a modern fire laboratory with various furnaces for almost all types of fire tests.

This makes it possible for us to conduct almost all types of fire tests, from small-scale to full-scale, with items as high as 4.48 meters.
