Safe infrastructure for green PtX technologies
The SEA-PtX research project focuses on supporting the Danish strategy on decarbonization by means of accelerating the implementation and scaling of green Power-to-X (PtX) technologies in Denmark. A pivotal part in such acceleration is to build well functioning and safe infrastructures of storage, handling, and bunkering in Danish ports, as these play a key part as future green energy hubs.
Safety concerns and social acceptance in the port of Rønne
The project applies techno-anthropological theories and methodologies to explore and unpack possible safety concerns and ethical controversies within social acceptance among stakeholders across the PtX value chain in the port of Rønne. It will describe local controversies related to safety considerations and concerns surrounding PtX infrastructure in ports, and use ethnographic fieldwork to engage affected citizens in technology evaluation of these concerns.Handbook for social agreements on safety
Based on this, the project develops a handbook with guidelines and tools on how to establish social agreements on safety in PtX projects. This handbook will serve as a guiding tool for municipalities and technology developers for citizen engagement for new PtX facilities. Thus, the project taps into topics in the themed area of green research and technology development, i.e. developing new energy systems while also understanding societal consequences of these, and drafting tools supporting this shift.The project is undertaken in collaboration with Aalborg University and supported the Innovation Fund.
The project commenced in September 2023 and will conclude in September 2026.

A new comprehensive guideline on safety in installing Power-to-X plants aims to overcome barriers for the emerging industry. The guideline is an online tool that offers solutions to challenges faced by many stakeholders in the Power-to-X industry, and will be released on 10th September.

Fires in electric or hybrid vehicles cars on ferries pose a new, special risk. But it can be handled with the right additions to the existing emergency preparedness on board. This is the conclusion of the ELBAS project, which has been led by DBI.

How can companies and government agencies best involve citizens and local communities ahead of the construction of large green energy plants? The research project titled 'The Danish Model for Citizen Engagement in the Renewable Energy Transition' (DART) is aiming to tackle this question. DBI (The Danish Institute of Fire and Security Technology) is participating, with a focus on safety.

It is currently possible to build plants for the production of e-fuels such as ammonia in Denmark. However, the wider value chain is more uncertain.

The ports of Hanstholm and Frederikshavn are to become international role models for how to address and acknowledge neighbors' concerns when converting fishing and ferry vessels to CO2 neutral fuels. This is shown in a new report, which also concludes that the results can be incorporated worldwide.

The electrofuels industry has been given an online guideline that lays the foundation for a fast and safe implementation of the green technology. The guideline provides an overview of relevant standards and necessary approvals, along with a roadmap for the required safety measures.

DBI’s new ‘SafeSBU’ project aims to provide a set of guidelines that will support a fast and safe implementation of Power-to-X in ports. The guidelines will deal with the storage, bunkering and use of new fuels, identify training needs, and help to involve the general public in a way that they feel a sense of ownership.

When ships are built or converted to sail on methanol, ammonia or hydrogen, the current standards and guidelines are not enough. Together with ShippingLab, DBI is therefore to develop a tool that will make it possible to design a fire strategy for any vessel.

Hydrogen plays a key role in Power-to-X solutions to produce e-fuels. There is a need for development of new safety solutions for hydrogen, but it can be challenging to find a way through approval processes as an SME. DBI is part of an EUDP funded project demonstrating a new hydrogen sensor. Using this process as a case, the project will develop a guide for SME’s looking to develop technological solutions for the Power-to-X field.
